    • Considerations

      Pros

Ease of installation as a heat pump uses similar connections as an electric hot water system with similar footprint

      Locally made and supported

Digital connectivity via app and unit controller

70% more efficient than a standard electric storage, can reduce your running costs

Less harmful to the environment than alternate hot water solutions

R290 refrigerant has a low GWP

      Cons

      Tend to be quite heavy

Sufficient space is required around the heat pump unit

Hot water is not unlimited and will need time to recover if the tank is drained

      Higher upfront costs

Always use a licensed plumber when installing a hot water system.

Annual energy savings of up to 69.3% (200THC25) and 70.7% (300THC25) are based on TRNSYS simulation modelling approved by the VEU and ESS program using a medium load in Zone 3 and apply when replacing a reference electric water heater as defined in AS/NZS 4234:2021

The innovative Thermann R290 Integrated Heat pump is the ultimate hot water system. With a unit controller and easy-to-use app connectivity, plus a back-up heating element, it’s perfect for all Australian households. Designed and built in Australia for Australian conditions, the Thermann Integrated Heat Pump extracts heat from ambient air and transfers it to the water. Via the app, you can schedule heating or prevent heating while on holidays, all to reduce running costs. Plus, receive notifications on your mobile device, notifying you when your unit needs servicing.

    • Dual control with unit controller and easy-to-use app
    • Heat pump operates from –6°C up to 45°C. Element will automatically activate outside of these temperatures to ensure continued hot water delivery
    • Inbuilt ‘active defrost’ function
    • Eligible for federal and state government rebates

    Choose from 4 operating modes:

    • Schedule Mode:
Set the unit to operate at certain times, like when electricity is cheaper or to compliment solar PV.
    • Holiday Mode:
Use this mode when you are away and don’t need hot water, you can even set a return date.
    • Boost Mode:
Heat water quickly with the boost function.
    • Rescue Mode:
Never be without hot water. Should problems arise with the heat pump, you can use this mode.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Are heat pumps suitable for all climates in Australia?

Yes, the heat pump can operate in a temperature range between – 6°C to 45°C. Outside of this range, an electric element in the water heater will automatically take over heating to heat the water to 60°C.

    • Why can’t I connect my hot water unit to the app?

      There are a number of reasons why you can’t connect, the primary check points are listed below. Please ensure;

      • You’ve downloaded the Smart Life app
      • You have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned-on for the phone
      • You’ve paired the water heater to the app (you’ll need to enter pairing mode to do this)
      • You’ve selected the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network (it will not work on a 5Ghz network)
      • You’ve got reasonably good Wi-Fi reception where the water heater is installed
      • You have power to the water heater, and if connected to a concessional tariff you’re not trying to use it at times when power is not available.
If you still can’t connect, please call Customer Service on 1300 412 612 (Australia) or 0800 081 909 (New Zealand).

    • How do I connect another device to my Heat Pump unit?

You’ll need a secondary device which will also need to be set-up with a Smart Life app account. You can then share the primary device with the secondary one via email or SMS. Refer to the App set-up and configuration video.

    • Can I create a hotspot to connect to the water heater?

Yes, a hotspot can be used to connect to the water heater. However, this is only advised for establishing temporary connections like for example, forcing the heater to rescue mode in absence of a permanent Wi-Fi connection. The connection will fail as soon as the hot spot is turned off or the device creating the hotspot moves away from the water heater.

    • Can I connect my Heat Pump water heater to the 5G network?

The water heater can connect to a 5G modem as long as it can create a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. The water heater cannot connect to a Wi-Fi network with only the 5GHz bandwidth. Similarly, the water heater can only connect to a Wi-Fi router having a 2.4GHz band.

    • What if I can’t access my home Wi-Fi when standing next to the Hot Water System?

The water heater will operate without Wi-Fi, and most functions are available through the controller. To connect to the app, you may need to install a Wi-Fi booster to extend the signal to reach the water heater.

    • Do I need Wi-Fi to use this water heater?

No. The water heater controller comes set in ECO mode, which means once it’s commissioned and power is switched on it will work to heat water to 60ºC. You can use the controller on the front of the water heater to change modes and settings.

    • How does the element work in the heat pump?

The element will not operate automatically, unless in an appropriate mode e.g. ECO mode, where it will only turn on in certain ambient conditions (less than -6ºC, and greater than 45ºC) if heating is required.

    • Is the heat pump PV ready?

The heat pump does not have an excess PV input function. Whilst not directly connected to your PV system, the heat pump can be scheduled to work when the PV system is generating power e.g. between 10am and 4pm.
